I'm a fan of portillos and went to one in Chicago when I was there. This one was just the same. If you've never been I would try it. Lots of different options on the menu. I like the big beef sandwiches. If you like chocolate I would get the cake shake. You won't regret it.

Tonight we tried a new place, portillos, and didn't regret it! The hot dog was tasteful and delicious. We also ate the beef n cheddar on croissant. It was very tasty. I recommend the sweet peppers too. Quick service, food awesome. You have to go if you're in the area.

This place is awesome. 2nd time here and I'm sure there will be many more. The Italian sausage with sweet peppers is great. Everyone is very friendly and the place is very clean. I will be back agai and again!

The Italian dip with sweet and hot peppers and chocolate cake shake was the best we've had in a long time! The perfect meat to gravy and bread ratio. The shake and sandwich was the perfect combo after a long day at Knott's!

First time here and it was very good. Just wish the portions were a bit bigger, but that's my fault, I didn't ask on how big the hot dogs were. Fresh quality ingredients and made to order, nothing precooked. Clean restaurant and friendly staff. Would def come back and try the other menu items. :) Parking is a little tough as it shares the lot with Walmart, and we all know how that goes.. so if you want, there's a convenient drive thru too. :)

Old school dinner/ fast food decor. the beef sandwhich is by far the best sandwhich. Get the Big beef if your super hungry. Its very soft and juicy. But their most specialize item is the Chocolate Cake shake. They put a real chunk of chocolate cake in there and make it into a shake. Its so unhealthy, but i have to order that particular shake everytime i go. I don't even like shakes. I have issues.

What an awesome yelp find! This place is cool. From the exterior to the inside and even their patio area, it's a causal, fun dining experience. You place your order at the counter and then wait for your number to be called when your order is ready. Note: orders are not ready in numerical order. Once you get your order, you can sit anywhere. Inside or the outside patio area. My foodie companion and I chose to sit inside. The decor is fun and reminded me of my days when I lived in Chicago. We ordered the Italian Beef Sandwich, polish dog, Italian sausage hot dog, classic beef Chicago dog, chili cheese fries and yes, an apple walnut salad :) Food was amazing. The bread/bun were perfectly cooked (I'm sure the butter helped lol), especially the Italian sausage bread. The order of chili cheese fries was definitely smaller than expected. Unfortunately I didn't leave room for dessert, but I'll def go back for some more hot dogs and some sweets :) Plenty of parking, but it was pretty packed during the weekday for lunch. Portillo's is located within walking distance of Knotts Berry Farm so I assume it gets crowded, especially during the summer months and weekends.

Probably hands down the best beef sandwich I have ever had. Prices are incredible and they actually let you purchase the meat to take home. The chili cheese dog and chili cheese fries were good maybe a little extra flavor would have put the over the top. They have a chocolate cake shake that is out of this world especially on hot days like today!! I definitely will go back.

Solid Italian beef sandwiches and super tasty hot dogs. I recommend adding peppers and cheddar cheese with aujus on the side. Also the chocolate cake shake is a must. You'll thank me later.

SUNDAY NOT-IN-THE-MOOD-TO-COOK NIGHT grab a chargrilled maxwell street polish sausage with grilled onions or their italian beef sandwich with an order of crunchy fries. yum!

Heard the good reviews so we decided to try it. The Italian Beef is awesome. Hot peppers on the side if your not that much into chili hot but still want a slight kick. Onion rings are awesome. Chili cheese fries are delicious. The atmosphere was great. We left feeling full and happy. The young lady who helped us was so sweet and funny . Her name is Diana and we told her it was our first time there and she recommended everything we ate. She was awesome.

Damn I wish this place was closer to Hell A. Finally made it to Portillo's and had to have a little of everything. Chicago Dog, tasty, bonus land; having never had an original from the windy city. Italian Beef, so good, so moderately priced, so moist. Although I could do with a little less flavor juice the meat and bun were gone so quick it didn't get too drenched. My son ordered a hamburger because he is just a child, but he liked it. The chili fries were small, but also cheap and worth it. Oh please let me have a reason to head south to Portillo's soon.

When I lived in Buena Park, you'd find me, at least twice a week, at Portillo's. The food here is really good! I've had a lot of their menu offerings, which have all been good, but today, I'm going to tell you about my all time FAVORITE thing at Portillo's: the Roast Beef and Cheddar Croissant. The buttery croissant stays crisp on the outside, but the inside absorbs that glorious roast beef juice on the inside; the inside actually becomes soggy (in a good way). The hot beef melts the cheese so perfectly, it blends into each bite of the sandwich. The fries aren't the greatest, but, they do the job as a standard "side/filler" food. Sometimes, they can be waaaaaaaaaay over salted. Oddly enough, I've been to Chicago four times in my lifetime, and have never tried Portillo's in it's hometown. But then again, there are way too many good eats in Chi-town that you can't get in California, so maybe that's why. Whenever I do visit the Buena Park area, however, I do stop into Portillo's!

This place is super dope. A little bit of Chicago in California is the best way to describe the vibe you get going into the establishment. I went on a recommendation from a friend to try this place out. It did not disappoint. At all. If you enjoy Italian beef sandwiches (wet or dry) and other Chicago style sandwich eccentricities, this is your spot. I ordered the Italian beef sandwich wet with hot peppers (you have an option for sweet peppers as well), and I was in heaven. The au jus from the beef was soaked up by the spongy white Italian bread and it really heightened the tasting experience for the sandwich. They put copious amounts of the protein of choice into your sandwiches and every bite really resonates well with all your flavor receptors. The spicy vinegary peppers with the tender Italian beef and au jus infused bread almost brings a tear to your eyes. After that fateful sandwich experience my following visits included ordering the beef cheese croissant, Italian beef sandwich, Italian beef and Italian sausage half and half sandwich, and Maxwell street style hot dog. All of those items were good, and I actually moved on from the Italian beef sandwich and crowed the beef and cheese croissant as my new favorite menu item. Outside of sandwiches and hot dogs, they do carry salads and dessert items. Give Portillos a try, there's something for everyone. Plus, if you enjoyed the experience, you can always take an order of the beef or peppers with you in bulk, as they sell them in bulk to anyone that wants it.

Their sandwiches are enormous but worth it. However I ordered the chopped salad. Their milkshakes are to die for. I loved loved loved their mint chocolate shake. It has mint and real chocolate fudge. The sandwiches delicious. Must add the sweet and spicy peppers while hot. They have a drive thru if you don't want to go inside. They are fast in making their orders. Their work outfits are also really cool and add to the experience. They have a variety of hot dogs, American style foods such as onion rings, burgers, fries. This place resembles a Chicago style restaurant. The shakes though!!! Soooooo amazing!!!

It's always a must for myself and my family to come here after we go to Knotts. This location is located in a shopping area with tons of traffic. Cars are always coming and going and parking is tough. They have a drive thru if you want to conveniently get your food and go. I have never been through it so I am not sure how quickly their service is there. They are pricey since you have to purchase everything seperate. Inside the place is always packed and sometimes hard to find a table. They do not have too many tables on the inside, but they do have some seating on outside too. The decor is here is really awesome to look out. Everywhere you look there is something different and eye catching. I love their Italian beef sandwich. You can add sausage to it but I am not a fan of sausage so I make do without. I love to have then dip it for me, it's so delish! Sometimes I get it double dipped if I'm feeling it, but it does make the bread really soggy. Still tastey though. Definitely add the peppers to the sandwich, it makes it so much more flavorful. Not spicy. I got my girls hot dogs and the buns are poppy seed and so soft. Really good!! You can't go wrong here.

Portillo's is one of those rare places that you can go to 50 times and all 50 times it will be great. I know because I have been to this location that many times (or more) and it is always a treat. Their Italian beef sandwich with sweet peppers is highly addictive and unbelievably consistent. I always order it dipped or with extra gravy. If you have not tried ordering the ingredients for the Italian beef to go and making the sandwiches at home, it too is a wonderful treat. Also if you have a hankering for a cold Bud, no one serves a better frosty beer from on tap. It doesn't matter if you drive thru or dine in, we always have a great experience. My family and I always stop in when we are in the area. It is that good!

When I moved to Orange County, a friend who had once worked in Buena Park kept telling me I needed to go to Portillo's. Finally we met there for one of our catch up sessions. I was really looking forward to an indulgent meal since I've been obstaining from beef and pork for a few months. She ordered the big beef with hot peppers and I ordered the Maxwell (polish with grilled onions and mustard). I had a bite of her sandwich and it was seriously delicious. I really liked my selection as well. I'll for sure be returning here to bring my father and husband. I'm glad this place is in Orange County, but juuuuust far enough from my house that it's not an easy stop or else I'd turn into a big beef!

This place has great food... The manager, the heavy chick, is why I give this place a low rating. She is so horrible to her guests... One time I came in cause my boyfriend at the time crashed into he light pol in front of the building and I had to pee really bad... They were just cleaning up... Closed but still cleaning.. I asked if I could use the restroom and an employee let me in cause I explained the situation... As soon as she saw me come it she started screaming at the guy for letting me in and told me to get out... I explained to her what happened and she still said I don't care that's not my problem get out.. Another time I came in wearing a band on my shirt, she sat there criticizing me for what I was wearing. She needs to be kicked to the curb I won't go there anymore till I know she is gone.. Sorry portillos but I refuse to be treated like that!

This is one of my favorite places to eat. I used to live in Chicago where I loved portillos. So when I moved to California that was one thing I missed but lo and behold, they had one 10 minutes from where I lived. The Italian sausage and beef combo was the best thing there but u have to get it with sweet and spicy peppers. Also get their onion rings and cheese fries

Fun place and great hot dog place. Lots of choices for toppings but hot dogs aren't a pay extra money food for me. Glad I went but not hurrying to go back

I stopped by Portillo's since I was in the area for the first time in awhile. I had been hearing good things about it so decided to stop in and get that authentic Chicago experience. The place is well decorated with night light signages all over the place. I decided to try what they do best: the italian beef sandwich, the chicago dog, and some fries and a drink. I'll start with the Chicago dog. I'll be honest, not really a fan. It's not this particular hot dog but I just don't like the taste of Chicago hot dogs in general. The tomato with relish and whole pickle on my hot dog is a little overbearing for me. I did however love the Italian beef sandwich. It beef was really soft and had great taste to it. It came with sweet peppers and cheese. My mouth is salivating thinking about it. I would definitely go for that if you are a first timer. Fries are actually good as well. I just went with the plain crinkly fries. Very good! Overall, I'm a fan and would definitely try it out again. Hopefully there are other gems on the menu.

Love love love Portillo's! I mean, who wouldn't love a sandwich filled with meat and hot peppers and dipped in a delicious slurry of meat juice and fat....no one I want to know, thats for sure. I got mine with extra gravy, but in retrospect, I would have dipped the whole thing. All I gotta say is, get on it, shit is amazing!!!

This place across the board has great food. Kind of cafeteria style ordering but they perfected making it easy on you. If your looking for a salad...stand by because they are fantastic. You will order salads from a different place than the "real food" so look for that and plan ahead. If you are ordering both, you will have to time it or have two people to order. I love the beef sandwiches...dipped is great...wet is good...and they have dry for the purists. The Italian Suasage sandwich is also really good. Add whatever toppings you want...their is an up-charge but still worth it. Burgers...damn good and EVERYTHING...is reasonably priced. Kind of loud, fun, interesting...a good time to be had. Also...looking for a drive through...this place has it down. Food comes out fast and looks like you are inside eating.

This is an excellent place to eat. I ran into this place a few years ago in Chicago, Illinois and am thrilled to find one closer to home. This place has great hot dogs and sandwiches. Definitely a place to go and eat. But if you really want something delicious, get their Chocolate Cake. It is to kill for (because if you die for it you can't eat it). They have a great atmosphere and fantastic service as well.

Never disappoints. Onion rings are a little crispy, so all I did was dip them in the liquid cheese and, well, awesomeness. Hot dogs pop like they are supposed to.

Got a big beef with hot AND sweet peppers. You should do the same. The amount of gravy the sandwich came with was perfect. If you want an extra juicy sandwich, order it dipped. This was a legit sandwich that tasted just like it was from Chicago. The veggies and peppers added a nice crunch to the juicy filled bread (which was kinda spongy) but that's what happens when you get FRESH baked bread soaked. The sandwich was amazing. As always, the fries are delicious too. I always get cheese fries because if you're going to eat crappy, why not eat as crappy as possible? BOOM!! I love Portillos. I've had the burgers, the dogs, the beef, pretty much everything. One suggestion, the busier it is, the better. You can guarantee your food will be more fresh!

Affordable, but small portions. Original Chicago style hot dog: It has mustard, relish, freshly chopped onions, sliced red ripe tomatoes, kosher pickle and sport peppers on a poppy seed bun. The sport peppers stands out the most. It's a nice tangy twist to the typical hot dog. However; the ingredients made the bun soggy in no time. I dislike soggy buns! Also, make sure to check yourself in the mirror immediately after consuming. Those little seeds get stuck in your teeth! Italian Beef: Just beef on french bread. For an additional charge, you can choose hot or sweet peppers. Simple ingredients, but abundance in flavor! The next time I'm here, I would opt out on the hot dog and just get the Italian beef & fries.

Haven't been here for a while, but I remember it being very good! And my memory didn't disappoint! Very crowded but order line and take to make your food time is surprisingly fast. Good prices, could be a bit cheaper. No children's menu is a negative and a bit odd. Cake shake is great! Fries are ok. Ahi tuna caesar salad is fantastic!

  • Correen B.

I love me a good Italian beef sandwich! Portillos also serves delicious looking burgers, Chicago style hot dogs, sausage sandwiches, and even crisp salads. Note that I said delicious "looking" because I've never had anything but the Italian beef! It is so tender, juicy, and well seasoned, and it is served on a chewy white roll. I always order it with extra gravy, and mozzarella cheese. I'm not gonna lie, it is one messy sucker to eat. Probably not somewhere you want to bring a first date, but if you don't mind having your dining companion see you with food all over your face, and juice running down your arm, then have at it. Their chili cheese fries are wavy cut, crisp fries, topped with a really flavorful spicy chili, cheese and onions. One small is more than enough to share. Food comes out of the kitchen FAST.

I love Portillo's. We drive all the way down here from Culver City at least every other month for some delicious Italian beef. Worth the 45 min, sometimes hour drive every time. I highly recommend you get an Italian beef sandwich dipped in gravy with some grilled onions and cheese melted on. Don't get anything else, not a salad or chicken or a hot dog. The beef is the main attraction!

  • Trina D.

I'd heard some good things about Portillo's and I may never go to the one in Chicago so when there wasn't enough food at the latest Yelp movie event, we went in search of more sustenance. We found Portillo's. I ordered the chili cheese dog without onions and some fries. I was pleasantly surprised that the fries were crinkle cut. The chili dog itself was pretty good on a soft poppy seed bun. The hot dog had a nice snap to it and the cheese was melted. Not a bad meal for under $6. The service was quick. I ordered it to eat at the restaurant but it still came in a bag. What's the point in asking if you're still going to put it in a to-go bag? The decor reminds me of Lucille's meets Fuddruckers. Very vintage Americana is the description I'd give it.

MMMMMmmmmmMMmMmmMMmmMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!! When I went to Chicago earlier this year, I had the chance to try some of the food there (lots of sandwich places). Portillos was one of those places and luckily our friends who grew up in Chi-city were showing us around and told us exactly what we needed to get there. A Combo (italian beef + italian sausage) dipped (in gravy) with Sweet peppers (or Hot if u like it that way). So of course we did that and boy... i had a big ol' smile on my face the entire time. Warning: some of us Californians may not like a soggy sandwich so if this is the case, either don't get your combo dipped, or, just know that its gonna be soggy... but that gravy makes the sandwich so good... Anyways; We came here this past weekend with our friends from Chicago and were not disappointed. They did mention the gravy was a bit darker and saltier than they were used to but I honestly could not tell the difference. It was fantastic!!! Combo, dipped, with hot peppers on it, sweet peppers on the side. Cheese fries. GF got a Neapolitan shake which was really good too! Definitely give this place a shot. Decor definitely reminded me of my chicago trip. PS: I tried their Chocolate cake and their chocolate cake shake in Chicago.. didn't try it at this location but they were both really good as well.

Taking me back to my roots, the arrival of this place was a godsend. I was a Portillo's regular back where I was born and raised, so when news reached me that they were coming to California and at my doorstep, I couldn't have been more thrilled. Everything is just like home with the decor and the food - the greasy, homey, delicious and fresh food I grew up with. I've had pretty much everything on the menu at one point in time and all were above average to awesome. I'd recommend anything on the menu. But my favorites are usually the maxwell or regular or jumbo dogs, and the fries are crisp and amazing. The burgers are very good but that's not something I normally get. It's all about delicious hot dogs and fries. It's the closest thing to Hot Doug's that I can get over here on the west coast.

I had only heard about this place probably an hour before I got there, but I'm happy we stopped by. We had some time before the Xmen movie event so we stopped by for some dinner. It reminds me a LOT of Fuddruckers. I got a chili dog and onion rings. The chili dog was good, the dog had that snap like at Pink's. Absolutely loved the onion rings. It was very much like the ones from the Hat but in actual personal portion size unlike the Hat's share it with a family size. The Chili dog was cheaper than their burgers, so the onions rings plus dog was under $6. I wish we had more time to spend there since I would have loved to have some dessert but we had to head back for our movie. Next time I'm in Buena Park and not going to Knott's chicken dinner or korean BBQ, I'll have to swing by here again.

I like Portillos. The closest is a 300 mile drive from my home ...I don't get there often but enjoy it when I do. The food: Plenty has been written here about the Italian Beef Sandwich. Excellent! Double Dipped and sloppy as you can get. Yes, I add a little pepper. If you like your beef with a little more pizzazz just sprinkle liberally. I also get the beef delivered frozen to my house from the website and make them at home. The sandwiches arrive in great condition and cook up wonderfully. Not a big fan of the hot dog. Not bad, just not my favorite. The most underrated item on the menu is the cheeseburger. Probably just overshadowed by the beef. Great burger with all the fixings out the door for under $5. with tax included. Hard to beat! The chocolate cake is good, but if you are going to have it... have the chocolate cake shake. Best way to eat chocolate cake is to bury it in ice cream!

Kind of far but the trip was fun. I don't really spend too much $ for hot-dogs unless its costco or sonic. This place had a fun diner/tourist atmosphere. Ordered: -Chili hot dog (good, especially the chili) -Chili fries (good, super hot) -Cheeseburger (ok, hot) Its so fresh that you need to be careful on how hot it is. Good American-sit down diner place. Saw lots of families with big tables of kids from softball. *Wish I would've tried the italian beef sandwich I kept hearing about* Good experience though.

This is a chain out of the Chicago area offering specialties not known in Southern California. They have worked and succeeded at offering the same quality of food so far from the source that need to be commended and noted. Italian beef, sausages and hot dogs are all a perfection home away from home fix. Our mechanic is also a Chicago transplant so each time I'm behind the Orange Curtain I will call him and order lunch to go for him and his workers. Drive it 30 minutes home and makes everyone feel amazing appreciative that this chain would bother with expanding thousands of miles from home. Because this is what you do for Chicago family. I have dragged many of my friends to this location, which is NOT found along the most main drag and everyone of them has returned happy to have learned about this jewel. Just being able to go out later in the evening to grab a good meal until 10 pm is such a pleasure, CA is not a place for night owls.

I've been to Portillo's twice. O N L Y T W I C E...or maybe it's been 3x now.... Anyhow, the 1st visit was by far the best. In hindsight, the stars must've aligned, because I remember the 2nd-visit involving a smooshed bun due to the tightest of all burger wraps, and unfortunately the 3rd-trip had a different bun problem (related to the abundance of grilled-onions:) soggification from onions. That's the way it goes. And I really can't wait to go back. I'm not into the snapping-skin of hot-dogs, but if they're not that variety I'll give'm a shot next time. Their french fries were great. I recall scoring some ranch on-the-house for being polite when I ordered my schooner, so be prepared to pay for a side-sauce. Unless you're ordering a salad. And the salads are large, so non-meat-eaters can rejoice at Portillo's. But they'll have need to be in the mood for a bowl of veggies, literally. Try and beat the lunch and dinner rush, so you can avoid crazy-long lines or stadium-parking scenarios. I was between 4 and 5-stars for Portillo's, but there's nothing wrong with being a fan, or 4-stars. The patio's perfect for larger parties, before/after events & gatherings. Watch out for the chocolate-cake shake. 1/3 was all I could finish. Thankfully I went w/ a small. Sweet's an understatement.

Get the italian beef with hot peppers! it's a great sandwich! I'd skip the combo italian sausage and beef sandwich though, I think it kinda takes away from the beef too much competition in the sandwich. They have a chocolate cake shake, which sounds devastatingly good, i'm going to try that next time. Supposedly they get a slice of chocolate cake and then blend that into a milkshake.... yeah wtf......totally ordering it next time. Chicken tenders are breaded well and juicy, but the portions are small and you get a ranch "style" dipping sauce, so basically imitation ranch (come on guys, ya'll better than that right? even jack in the box has real ranch dressing.) they also have schooners of bud or bud light for $2.50 small or $3.50 or a big one.

I took my family here while we were visiting knots berry farm. It is literally down the street no more than 5 minutes. The prices were amazing and the food was even better. Way better than spending $15 on a hamburger at knots. I feed a family of 6 for under $30. Definitely will be going back when I'm in the area.

Every time we're near Buena Park, we have to stop at Portillo's. Being originally from Chicago and loving the Big Beef from Portillo's we can't get enough. The ambiance is the same as the Chicago locations and it's a great piece of home here in our own back yard! The food is great, the service was nice. I like their chicken sandwich, my kids love the beef sandwiches!!

Do you see that? Do you see what happens? A past 5-star review now dropped to a hesitant 3-star. Well, the food hasn't changed; it's still the same. So what was it, you ask? Completely contradicting Portillo's dedication to its customers--"serving 'the best food' and 'the best service' available"--the behind-the-counter service left a bad taste in my mouth. For the past nine days now, I've thought about how best to address this. I mean, I simply came to Portillo's--drove out of my way from Fullerton--to enjoy an Italian Beef Sandwich: yelp.com/biz_photos/port… . I like these, especially when "dipped." (If you want it "dipped," you need to ask.) But, sadly, due to the continued poor service, I'm going to pass. For me--and evidently, others--it's not worth the exchange. You see, appreciation is much like empathy in that it's obvious when the sentiment is genuine or completely phony. Customers have options, and (for whatever reasons) had on this day chosen you, Portillo's. Showing sincere appreciation for that choice--and letting your employees' service reflect it--affirms your customers' decision and adds strength to the relationship you've hopefully built. I'm sorry to say that on this day, Portillo's, there was a problem. If you're interested, I've reserved my receipt (instead of posting it, since it includes your employee's name,) and I am willing to share my concerns at your convenience. Until then, you've lost my business. You still have a great Italian "dipped" Sandwich--I am more than happy to agree--but the "attitude" side spoils the meal.

I ordered the Chili Cheese Dog & Cheese Fries for $5.83 The Hot Dog was juicy, the Chili was so good and the Cheese was great. The Fries were crispy and the Cheese was the perfect combo. An All-American Meal from this Drive Thru.

Best dogs in the area and the Big Beef sandwich is full-on awesomesauce. If you like dogs, chili-cheese dogs, or (best of all) Chicago-style dogs. This is the only place to go. French dip fans, or folks who are just plain hungry, should go for the Big Beef sandwich. Many are the noms to be had here. :)

The dogs were good but could have used a better bun for the sausage. The onion rings cannot be recommended. The trend these days seems to be just go frozen. This is a no no especially for onion rings.

Portillos is unique.... It's a traditional grease pot!!! Double Cheeseburger was extremely greasy. It was a bit gross when the bread got all soggy knowing that crap has infiltrated my circulatory system but it was soooooooo yummy. Sausage/Meat Sammich. It's plain and simple. Just a bunch of crap in the middle of a classic hoagie bread. The portions a bit small but do-able. Freedom Fries. I recommend no salt cause it's overkill in my opinion. Service is ample. Wait time can suck especially during lunch rush! Parking is ample, after all it's in the BP Mall.

I'm a bad yelper. I've been coming to Portillos for quite a while now, and haven't written an update to my previous update. Originally I gave them 4 stars, but then about 4 years ago, they started to slip up a bit, so I dropped them to 3. Well all's been right at Portillos for quite a few years now, and I just realized I never upped my star level. This is a 5 star Chicago hot dog, made the way I believe a Chicago dog should be made. Perhaps a few will disagree. They want it to really snap or be grilled in someway....fair enough you can find them like that in Chicago. But to me this is the quintessential presentation.....a steamed Vienna Beef Dog, a steamed Vienna Beef Poppy Seed Bun, Neon Green Vienna Beef relish, chopped onions, pickle slice, nice red tomato slices, yellow mustard, celery salt, and sport peppers. Yes it gets a little mushy, but have you looked at Chicagoians? They too are on the slightly mushy side, especially around the middle. A correctly made Chicago Italian Beef Sandwich is kind of mushy because it's dipped in the Au Jus. That's the real deal folks. Now originally I had Portillos' Chicago Dog at 4.5 stars, but that's because for years they refused to use the neon green relish and just had the regular stuff. Low and behold they finally started using the real funky looking stuff a few months ago. I have no idea what took them so long. I have nothing negative to say about this dog, just a piece of advice. Always get the Jumbo which is thicker. Without it the toppings to dog ratio is all off. More hot dog is always a good thing. yelp.com/biz_photos/port… My other complaint from a few years back was they suddenly started cutting their awesome crinkly fries thinner. Well I'd say they aren't quite back to the original specs, but they aren't near as skinny as they used to be. They have a medium thickness to them, and are still excellent. My analysis has always been that the crinkles hold the salt better and also provides more surface area exposed to the oil when frying, thus more flavor. Yum. Still a fan of the Italian beef here although I rarely get it, as I've found a better one at Tony's Little Italy in Placentia. It's been a while since I've had a Maxwell's Polish Sausage, so assuming nothing has changed, I'm not that big a fan of it. I have pretty much tried most of their menu over the years, and nothing else really sticks out, which is why I keep Portillos at 4 stars rather than 5. Their salads are not happening, although look nice. I just stick with those Jumbo Vienna Beef Chicago Dogs and Fries. Service is impressive considering how packed it can get around lunch time. It's a well oiled machine and very consistent. As you can see from my checkins, I keep coming back and back and back.

I ate a late dinner at Portillo's in Buena Park, CA on 10/10/2014. It was my 1st time there. Bryan, who works here, recommended the Combo Beef & Char-Grilled Sausage for $6.25 with onions and mozzarella (.60 extra). I also added hot pepper (.59 extra). Onion rings cost $2.19. Marsan, my cashier, recommended their Pumkin Shake ($2.89). The place has an unusual decor (I liked it) and they call out your numbers like they were calling out a bingo game. I was happy with their recommendations. Plus, I took photos.

The hot dogs are amazing. The beef sandwiches are amazing. The polish dogs are amazing. I love that you can opt for sweet or hot peppers on your food. My only complaint is that every time I go, it's difficult to find an open table!!

The first Portillo's hot dog stand known as "The Dog House" opened in 1963. The small trailer with dedication from the ownder to serving "the best food" and "the best service" available grew to such an institution today. Having a Portillo's in the relatively close city of Buena Park, it is always a treat, Probably the coolest place in Buena Park, Portillo's is always a spot for a fun environment and classic American fare. Everyone loves a good joint where health gets thrown out the window. Being the new year and all, I had a combination of healthy and "real" food. Overall, it was an awesome experience. The hot dogs and Italian beef sandwiches at Portillo's don't scream healthy healthy, so I opted to start off with a salad. I know. Something is changing insdie of me. Maybe it's the new year that is making me make these "right" decisions. Their chopped salad was quite surprisingly good. The iceberg and romaine lettuce was chopped finely. It was tossed with cubed chicken, gorgonzola cheese, red cabbage, pasta, tomatoes, bacon, green onions and house dressing. The mixture made for a delicious salad that was somewhat healthy. The gorgonzola popped with flavor and the pasta inside gave it some sustenance. The finely chopped greens made this salad easy to eat. Delicious! At Portillo's, they have an Italian Beef with Italaian sausage sandwich. This had both thinly sliced, succulent beef with Italian sausage on top. I got the salad just so I can eat this bad boy. Stuffed with either hot or sweet peppers (I opted for the sweet peppers), the sandwich had a lot of pronounced flavor. The Giardiniera on top finshed this sandwich off nicely. The beef with the zesty Giadiniera made this sandwich a top pick. Yeah, I didn't get the hot dog at Portillo's. Personally, their hot dogs aren't that great. It is all about the Italian beef and sausage. Because of the Italian sausage, I ate this more like a hot dog than anything else. A little mustard on top to cut the fat, and I was all smiles. I really wanted to get the cheese fries. The cheese fries was just french fries with a side of cheese sauce. What is better than french fries that a side of cheese sauce? Gravy, maybe? I settled for some onion rings. I haven't had it in a while and I thought it would go nicely with my beef and sausage sandwich. I was right! The onions rings really hit the spot. It was crunchy and full of flavor. The cheese fries can wait for next time. Portillo's is a really chill spot. The food is greasy and delicious, and the price is reasonable. Inside and out, the design of it all is unique and fun. On the day that I went, there was a small group of old school cars parked outside. Car club? Just to go to this awesome eatery with a cool vibe made my experience special. Food and all, this is one of my favorite Orange County picks for good eats.

The chopped salad is incredible. It comes with a warm lemon poppyseed muffin that can't be beat. I also like the chocolate shakes, crinkle cut fires, and the jumbo chili dogs. Portillo's is a Chicago-based restaurant that just happens to have a few locations in the California area, and this place always reminds me of good times in the Windy City.

I'm originally from Chicago and grew up on Portillo's being my family's go to take out restaurant for the first 18 years of my life, and naturally when my girlfriend came along post LA move-she became an adopted Chicago native and loved all of it's iconic restaurants, Portillo's being one of our favorites. The LA draught of accurate Chicago style food can be rather depressing at times and due to a long few months of no trips back home we decided to hike up our skirts and make the long 1hr and 10 minute drive to Buena Park to hit 1 of only 2 Portillo's outside of the Chicago land area. Yes, it was a long drive but with hot dogs, Italian beef, French fries, chocolate malts, and era styled dinning on the brain we got there in a blink of an eye. Was it worth it? 100%. Due to a gift card from a friend the meal ended up being completely free as well, although as a heads up if you plan on making the drive don't leave during hours and plan on going to a movie at the local theater...because unfortunately there's not much else to do besides visit the world's dreariest mall...the mall doesn't even have a yelp account...now THAT should say something. Still, we got our Portillo's fix and we're good to go! ...for now.

Just went here with my family and this place is seriously crowded. We ate the Bacon Cheese Burger which was not that good, no flavor. The Italian Beef was ok, meat was tender, bread was a little soggy and it was kinda bland. Caesar Salad was so so, and the Strawberry Shortcake was very good. I don't think I'll be coming here again since this place is just overrated. Also, for the burgers I saw one guy use frozen meat patties, yuck!

OMFG! and WTF?! how have i lived XX years of my life without ever having Portillo's before now?! you yelpers weren't kidding about this place! around 730pm on a tuesday, they were super busy so i opted for the drive-thru (since i only saw one car...wrong! there were like 5 around the corner but it went pretty quickly. when i drove off, there were about 20 cars in the drive thru. so this was my first time here...i decided to go with 2 original portillo's hot dogs with everything on them. i wish i had ordered like 5 of them! they are SOOO amazingly delicious! i think next time i will try their jumbo hot dogs. if i wasn't so lazy, i'd drive back right now to get more! yup, they're THAT good. if this is what chicago food is all about, i'm gonna have to move there very soon. for those who aren't on-board with me about moving to chicago, go get yourself a hot dog with everything from this place! it will change your mind :P

A great higher quality "fast food" type of establishment! I tried the Maxwell Street Sausage and it was SO good! The sausage had that "crunch" through the casing when you bite into it. Peppers and onions are a great compliment, along with the strip of mustard. Hubby got the Italian Beef sandwich, and it was... beefy! Loaded with piles of thinly sliced beef and peppers... tasty! Prices are definitely affordable. You really get a bang for your buck here. One thing that rubbed me the wrong way was the chick who took our order. She seemed impatient and definitely had an attitude and wasn't friendly. It was obviously our first time, there was nobody behind us, and there are a LOT to choose from on the menu, so we took some time (no more than 2 minutes) to look at our options. I don't even think she made eye contact with us... she just stared onto the screen or off to the side... what was up with that? Anyway, her rudeness didn't affect the tasty food. The lady cleaning up the tables was very nice, though.

WEAR YOUR STRETCHY PANTS!!!!! This place is so gooood! Like scary good. Lol I always order their chili cheese dog and chili cheese fries (I know chili cheese overload) but it is so amazing I can't get enough. But really, you can't go wrong with anything on their menu. When you are waiting for your order they call your number in the most entertaining way.... Number 21, your order is done. 9-0, you're ready to go. Hehe it's cute to hear what they come up with it. Some workers are so creative. I drive from the Southbay just to eat here!! Go, go, go you won't be disappointed!

Pros: - Their Chicago dogs are fabulous. The bun, pickle, dog, just all goes great togheter. I need at least 2 to be satisfied. - Their Chili cheese fries are good as well I've had better: - Their Italian beef sandwich was blah. The beef itself has a smell that wasn't the best and the sandwich last flavor. I've had much better elsewhere.

This was my second time at Portillo's but my first time didn't count because it was a long time ago and I didn't know what to order and I ordered a plain hot dog. Anyways, this time I went fo lunch and had my sights on the Italian beef sandwich. So I got he Italian beef extra gravy, cheese fries, and a small chocolate cake shake. Italian beef- Pretty good amoun of meat. Bread was pretty wet from me ordering extra gravy. Meat was tender and flavorful. Really satisfying! Cheese fries- They give you fries and a container of cheese sauce on the side. These are really freakin good fries on their own. And that cheese sauce is addicting. It is amazing! Chocolate cake shake- I got this cause the Yelp reviewers loved it. I was not too impressed. It is very ice creamy but not so chocolatey. I was hoping for more chocolate flavor.

Just in town for a day with a colleague and she said we should try Portillo's. I ordered a tuna sandwich ( I don't really eat burgers or hot dogs) Sandwich was pretty good. The flow of the line was really odd, as there are two different places to pick up food and drink. The restaurant was just loud from the music, not too many other customers at the time we went. Don't think I will be returning.

Portillos, Portillos, Portillos! What more can I say that hasn't already been said in their over 1200+ reviews. This place has a drive thru as well as a large indoor dining area and outdoor enclosed patio area. They serve everything from salads and wraps to burgers, dogs and italian style sandwiches and all are delicious. This place is ALWAYS super busy and still gets their food out promptly and correctly to their customers. The food is flavorful, the restaurant is immaculately clean and the service is top notch. The BBQ salad & charbroiled chicken sandwich are two of my favorites. I hope to have many many more meals at Portillos. Definitely check this place out as they are unique and truly in a class of their own. Nothing else quite like it in the area.

I grew up in the Chicagoland area and have eaten at many Portillo's restaurants. What a treasure to find this one in Buena Park, CA! I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only is this store authentic, it is one of the best Portillo's restaurants I have ever visited.

Dude. I cream in my pants every time I go to Portillo's. I do not understand how anyone doesn't give this place 5 stars, I'd say they're high, but if that was the case they would be checking the 5th star box. Sign me up for the combo sanny extra hot peppers, a standard dog, and some fries. CHEESE SAUCE ON EVERYTHING. And if every thing on the menu being stellar wasn't enough for you, large schooners of ice cold beer for $3.50 to quench your thirst. Thank you DICK PORTILLO for being so damn wood. Bye Yelp.

Came in on a Thursday night and wasn't crowded at all. We walked to the register where we weren't greeted at all and was stared down by one of the girls and was rudely taking our order. Having terrible customer service completely ruins our dining experience.. Sad thing is, my family adores this food joint! IDK if I'll be back soon. Maybe drive thru will have better service.

A friend recommend I try this place when I mentioned I like chili hot dogs. I had the Portillo's Dog, Chili Dog and a strawberry milkshake. The hot dogs I tried were delicious except the Portillo's Dog was a little spicy for me. Strawberry milkshake was creamy decadent like a old fashion 50's diner milkshake. Yum! I plan to come here when I am craving for a chili hot dog again.

Im from Chicago and this is exactly the same here in California as it tastes there. My favorite is the Italian beef with sweet and hot peppers a must get the gravy on the side for dipping. Best sandwiches around here no doubt.

It's a decent hot dog place if you want a quick place to eat and the standard fast food meals. They do have a wonderful chocolate cake shake with bits and pieces of cake :) When you get a hot dog with all the fixing, the bread might be a bit soggy so eat it quick. Get the cheese fries!

I cant believe I haven't reviewed Portillo's yet. It may be because I take for granted that I'm a hop, skip & a jump away from this fantastic, cool, delicious dining experience. The reputation of Portillo's speaks for themselves. I could never imagine them ever getting a bad review & if they did...well I just wouldn't believe it. I had the privilege to dine at this fantastic location during their grand opening a few years back & I keep going back for more! Everything from the exterior to the interior, from the service to the food, is pure satisfaction! Over the years I've probably tried just about everything on their menu. Portillo's offers you quality & quantity at a reasonable price. The atmosphere is funtastic. The decor is creative with a Chicago twist. The ambiance will put a smile on your face & make you go back for more. I've had everything from their famous Italian Beef Sandwiches, Jumbo Chili Cheese Dog, Grilled Tuna Sandwich, Bowl of Chili, a variety of Salads (their garbage salad is one of my favorites), Crinkle-Cut French Fries, etc. Believe me when I say I've had almost one of everything on their menu, it is no exaggeration! Everything from their menu is made with TLC! They take great pride in offering their customers an overall outstanding dining experience. As soon as you take that first bite, you're hooked! Everything on their menu is delicious. They are known for some of the best Italian Beef Sandwiches & Hot Dogs BUT don't let that distract you from the other goodies they offer. Order both! Did I mention that their "Chocolate Cake Shake" is too die for! It is out of this world delicious. Its the definition of YUMMY. It can't possibly get any better. Do yourself a favor & have yourself a Portillo's experience. Promise you wont regret it!

Best damn food west of the Mississippi! If you have ever been to Chicago you know Chicagoans love food and this place is straight out of the Windy City. My favorite would be beef sweet and hot with a cheese fry but everything is good. Salads are big enough to share and the chocolate cake shake actually has cake chunks in it. I may live in SoCal but with Portillo's I can still get a little taste of home.

Wow. What a sandwich. I've always loved Chicago-style hot dogs and deep dish pizza, but many friends of mine from the Midwest and East Coast kept telling me that I was missing out on some of the best blue-collar food Chicago had to offer by not having had an Italian beef sandwich. That all changed my first time at Portillo's. When I first went I ordered just a Chicago dog because all I wanted was a snack. The dog was tasty but light on the celery salt and the frankfurter was just alright. Go to Taste Chicago for some legit Chicago dogs instead. Since I was still hungry after ordering the dog I decided to try the famed Italian beef sandwich. I ordered it regular with hot peppers. I was blown away!! The meat is incredibly juicy from the gravy and the hot peppers cut through the grease so as not to make it feel too heavy. The gravy also imparts all that delicious beef flavor. While it might be a messy sammy it's definitely worth having to grab a couple extra napkins. Great food in a nice family style dining room. They also have a large patio for enjoying those warm nights, and they serve beer to boot! All in all, one of my new favorite places in north OC. I will definitely be coming back here on a regular basis. Thank you Portillo's!!!

For real!?! It was just ok. Nothing special ya cee. It's like they tried to sell the atmosphere more than the food. The burgers were better than average, but in alllll honesty- carls jr is better and they use the same flame broiler so it tastes close to the same taste for half the price. We also ordered a couple of Italian beef sandwiches and they too were just blahhh. Fries and onion rings on the side which were boring and expensive for the portion size. Let me tell ya, it's fun for the family here, but don't expect to be amazed by the food. I'll probably take a pass in this one, but to each their own. One thing I do know-- two different managers were working and both of them talked to every table because they know how to check on their customers. They were both five star managers. It's hard to find good managers like that! Trust me I know! So kuddos to the them!!

Stopped by for lunch a couple of days ago and thankfully did not find huge line that I was expecting. Tried the Jumbo Hot Dog ($2.89) and the Jumbo Chili Cheese Dog ($3.39) along with the Chocolate Cake Shake ($3.89). The original Jumbo hot dog was great with all its adornments while the chili on the cheese dog was mostly beans with very little chili so I did not like it very much and prefer the one that I can get at my local Wiener schnitzel. The biggest let down was the Chocolate Cake shake which I did not like at all. I'm not sure how people can like a bottom layer of chocolate cake topped with a layer of watery milk shake, so I guess each to his own. I liked the original Chicago style hot dog enough to warrant a return and look forward to trying their Italian Beef sandwich but will strictly stay away from the Chocolate cake shake.

This was our alternative option since Pinks at Knotts Berry Farm is closed down. Unfortunately, it was not our cup of tea. First, their layout is confusing. The first register was catering orders? Then the second station was for Order Pickup. The third register (far end corner for the restaurant) was where you place your order. Food: Regular hot dog was OK, nothing special. The Italian Beef sausage, was not something I would order again. It was my first time having it, it sort of had a mint taste to it and the texture made it feel as if I was eating a hamburger instead of a hot dog. BTW, their buns come with sesame seeds. Cleanliness: their tables and floor felt a little sticky. Restroom was decent. Overall, I would grade it a C. If I go here again, I think I'll just get a salad. They have a good variety of choices.

My wife & I are transplanted Chicagoans. And I mean Chicago natives not suburbans that say they're from the "Windy City" and live in Naperville! That being said, I really had to check out Portillo's; it's sad I never tried it back in Chi because it seems every mom & pop pizza joint serves Italian Beef sandwiches and we tried just about all. We were hard core Serrelli's fans. I have to say that Portillo's Italian Beef is with the top of its classmates. We decided to treat a lifelong Southern Californian to this special treat on her 85th. birthday and she was amazed! She thought it would be like LA's Philippe's French dips and was delighted with Portillo's. We catered it and was taken care of by a fantastic hostess, Kimberly. She was the greatest! She was really on her game and was a delight. We ordered the Giardiniera (hot peppers for you non-Chicagoans) as well as the sweet peppers with it. The sweet peppers were the only problem my taste buds encountered. I didn't find them as good as others I had back in Chi, especially Serrelli's, but that's OK!

I gonna need more Stars! I have been going to Portillo's for years, since 2004! A great Chi Town establishment that made it's way to this desolate wasteland when it comes to great food. Thankfully it is here. Best Hot Dogs Ever, makes Pinks in LA want to just cry as they know how rocking great and so much better that they are. The Chili Cheese Fries Are so incredibly awesome that Tommy's in LA just bows his head in utter loss wondering how they manage to do it so much better! In addition I just love the burgers here. They are good ole fashion burgers and are tasty even though they don't come close to my absolute favorite burger on the planet and we all know where that burger is. The Feline Foody AKA the West Coast Kitty said the burger was just all right, however she inhales the Italian Beef sandwich that is "DIPPED"(dunked right in the au jus of the beef) and is loaded with Sweet peppers! All the food here is amazing for exactly what it is, Good Ole Fashion Chi Town comfort food. Best thing is, this place is incredibly affordable and you don't leave hungry. Portillo's has two locations in CA, one in Moreno Valley at the 215 and the 60 and one in Buena Park if the 5 in Orange County same exit as Knott's Berry Farms.

Great food! For what you pay its amazing. I went with my daughter and for 20 bucks we got a great lunch with shakes and everything else we wanted. Great atmosphere also. Cool pictures on the walls and right by the mall and Knotts. Great after Knotts place to eat.

We really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. This city of Chicago themed eatery definitely had the flavor of chi town. We ordered the Italian beef sandwich, hotdog and polish. The portions were just right, the pricing is fair, they had clean restrooms and there is lots of free parking in the shopping center. The service was fast and efficient. I love the outdoor seating options too. Now...where to get a good deep dish pizza?

We were in Anaheim for a family matter, and looked for a place for lunch. The restaurant name was on the top in yelp so this is the reason why we were there. Actually the hot dog tasted good! - volume of Hot Dog was perfect, veggies like tomato, pepper and pickles were optional. Great! My father and I felt in the mood for smoothies so we ordered Strawberries and Mango. So good! Not too sweet but not too boring! Due to adding pepper on my hot dog, it tasted spicy but not too spicy. Such easy to being addicted if you love spicy! I gave 3 stars because poor services. A woman at the front desk gave us a paper because we were deaf and require to communication through paper. This was a good beginning but then she spoke to us to ask clarification instead of writing back to us. Writing down our orders wasn't obvious for her? Also, we had a service animal. A server around the tables area gave us a hard time. After we had a discussion, they allowed us to stay in the restaurant, and served us ketchup and mustard. But, the beginning was already bad, because they didn't communicate well with us at the front and the awkward moment about our service animal. Other features we liked were having a change table for the baby in the restroom, and having a toilet for a person with a wheel chair.

Portillo's is an A++ place, scoring high in all areas and never disappointing. My boyfriend introduced me, saying they had amazing Italian sausage sandwiches and an immediate image of a simple, smaller shop came to mind. We pulled up and I learned very quickly that was not the case, because what stood before me was a large brick building that seemed lively just from looking at the outside. We walked in and were greeted by the jazzy old time music of the 20's, horns, trumpets, and saxophones galore. As we walked to the counter, I noticed the abundance of seating inside and a patio outside, although it was very busy. Scrambling to take in the large menu, I spotted the Beef ' n Cheddar croissant and was sold. I then noticed, cheese fries and did a little leap inside. I love cheese fries! After finishing ordering, we glided down the designated pathway to the food pickup area. I glanced at the kitchen and noticed a lot of hustle and bustle and a lot of employees. Another charming touch is the way the call out the orders; each number has a corresponding, rhyming catchphrase, for example, "#3, come see me!" Love the bit of cheese. Even though they were incredibly busy we did not end up waiting too long at all and managed to snag a one one one booth. Also, the restaurant has a lot take and look at; enjoy the 1920's prohibition theme, with a lot of kitschy items on the loft of the ceiling. Signs and mugshots line the walls as well, making for a fun amusement. I opened up my sandwich and appreciated the unique croissant long roll as opposed to the typical crescent shape. I also pulled my cheese fries out and had to control myself from screaming out in joy at the amount of fries but also the cheese sauce and lots of it. It was a tough decision, whether to dip into the sauce or bite into the sandwich and frankly I cannot remember my choice, I juts know that both tasted equally amazing. The croissant was stuffed with the delicious, tender and moist Italian beef with melty cheddar cheese. I had never heard of Italian beef prior to his (shame on my Italian side, someones to blame for this misfortune!) but I was instantly in love. What makes Portillo's beef standout is the flavor and texture and the overall sandwich just melts in your mouth. I made sure to finish ever bite of my sandwich and eat every crumb of the fry while Shamefully licking the last bits of my beloved cheese sauce. I was stuffed and happy, reflecting that this meal was indeed worth it all. I did need the moments afterward to digest but I was very happy in my surroundings. Portillo's is as close as you can get to a true amusement experience for a quasi fast food establishment. I am going to throw out the big talk here and comment that this is the Disneyland of the franchises of the world. I am sure there are other cool themed spots but this happens to be the only I have experienced. Just sitting in the restaurant, I can close my eyes and think I was sitting somewhere in New Orleans Square in Disneyland because the music alone almost takes me to my happy place and for the alone, its a good experience. I have been here time and time again, always worth the extra drive because of the greatness and consistency. Consistency is always key, and I always know what to expect when coming here. In fact, after the first time I went, I insisted on having my sister try a few days later. I would boldly state thr Portillo's is a game changer for the food, experience, and beef sandwiches. This is a girl who has always been obsessed with Philly cheesesteaks and even labeling them my favorite food for a bit but I do declare that Portillo's wipes away my deisre for Philly cheesesteaks because Portillo's simply does it better. It may taste different, but I crave the Portillo's version more. I wish there were more around Orange County but someday I will take advantage of their drive thru and enjoy my delicious meal at home.

I like the beef dip sandwiches! (Always "double dip" style, with extra au jus on the side). Flavorful, mouthwatering slices of beef in an incredibly rich and savory au jus. The hot dogs have a good snap and are perfect. I just wish they had a worthy chili to match it.

This is the real thing, Chicago hot dogs and Italian beef. Sure you can eat other items on the menu but just these 2 delectable treats are enough. They get their food shipped in from Chicago which is why it's the real deal. Heck, you walk into the place and it's exactly like the one I go to when visiting relatives back east. Thank you god for letting us have real Chicago food here in SoCal.

It doesn't matter where your from you'll soon fall in love with the Chicago Dog from Portillo's. As I look around the restaurant watching customers tell their friends these are the best it makes me proud. My Grandparents introduced me to these awesome dogs nestled between the steamed sesame buns and haven't stopped enjoying them. Having the pleasure of growing up from the original Shack I have the right to brag about my dogs with cheese fries and the ONlY time I will I will drink Bud is from an ice cold Schooner. Open in Orange County and I'll guarantee you a major following!

This is place is awesome. The sandwiches are great just make sure you get hot peppers and mustard to give it that extra flavor. Great place to get a quick bite.

This place makes me happy and sad all at the same time. Super happy, because it reminds me of the fatass times I had while in Chicago, and super sad, because I miss my fatass times in chicago. The food here is really yummy and the atmosphere is pretty chill. I always get the cheese fries, halibut sandwich, and a pop. :)

I like the food here. Really good hot dogs and sandwiches. The service could be better. You have to pick up your food even when eating in. They called my number, I went up to the counter and no one was there. I had to reach way over to the other side of the counter to grab my bag of food. I even had to do this again when they called my number again for my shake I bought. Other than the " Crawl over the Counter Experience " the food and ambience were good.

Love this place! The Italian beef and Chicago style hot dog are great. Be sure to order it with every thing on both of them. The bread is one of the best I've had. Best part is it's very affordable.

Ordered a lettuce wrap and received a burger with lettuce just thrown on the bottom and then thrown on the top!!! FAIL!!!

A random Yahoo article told me that Portillo's was the nation's favorite sandwich chain so I decided to make a special trip despite the fact that it was quite out of the way. It's an order at the counter, wait from them to call your number and you bring your food back to your table kind of place. Though a little nicer and fancier than that. I arrived on a rainy afternoon around 1PM and the place was pretty quiet but there were about 5-6 cars in the drive through. The place is very large and situated in a shopping complex with a Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond and the like. Ample parking. I walked in and went straight to the line to order. It was my first time there and I had reviewed the menu before I went so I had an idea of what I wanted but I still felt like my cashier was a bit impatient. Anyway, I order and I go find a seat. By the time I find a seat and sit down and start a round of Candy Crush, my food was ready. It was really fast. My boyfriend got the Italian Beef which he really enjoyed but admitted that there was just SO MUCH MEAT in there. I mean, it was all meat. Some enjoy that but I can only take a bite or two before it's too much for me. I got a Jumbo Hot Dog which was probably the size of a Costco hot dog, maybe a bit smaller. It was like an extra delicious Costco hot dog. We also got an order of chili cheese fries and I think this probably stood out to me the most. The chili was really good, extremely flavorful and rich. I usually don't like crinkle cut fries because depending on how they're prepared they can be pretty nasty but they fried em up nice and crispy and they held up really well to the chili. I'd come back, though considering the distance probably not too often. They've got a pretty extensive menu and I'd like to see what else they have to offer. :)

I absolutely love their italian beef sandwiches (with hot & sweet peppers). I love their hot dogs too! But as good as their food is, this review is more about their unbelievable customer service. Several months back my friend and I had a great time, catching up and eating a delicious sandwich... I think we both may have even splurged that day and got their shakes. Later when we both got to our cars, my friend realized that he lost his keys so we looked all over the restaurant looking for it. Around our table, their... even areas we didn't go to. A couple workers, including the manager helped us. Ultimately, we realized that the only place the keys could be would in the trash, from throwing away our trays. The manager without any hesitation, dug through trash (wearing gloves of course), but didn't find it. That's when we realized that the keys must be in the trash, out by the dumpster... in the rain. So manager and another worker geared up, went outside in the rain, and dug through dumpster, going through each bag, and almost an hour later they found the keys. We only helped hold a flashlight, and get in and out of the dumpster, but still they we so appreciative of our little help. Though this is already several months later, I am still so grateful for their help in finding my friend's keys. This truly costumer service at its finest. Portillo's, especially this location, have won my loyalty for life.

Food is great but service is cold and pushy, the server had no tolerance for questions, I had to just order for the whole family with no input. Not too eager to come back after my first impression.

Been here two times and both times my orders were good. I would rate this 3 and a half starts but can't do it here. So sorry about that but I have tried better. Customer service was ok. The people that go there were friendlier. ;-} The place is right next to the mall and that is why it's super busy but there are many tables to eat at. I have tried their chili hot dogs and Portillo's polish dog. The polish dog is ok. Their fries are ok. Their onion rings are big but a little too greasy. The chili cheese fries were a little too salty for me or maybe the fries were just too salty? The breaded chicken sandwich was ok per my daughter. It was not something to brag about she said. Their bacon cheese burger was good. I did like their broccoli chowder soup, though. I liked the chocolate shake and the fruit smoothies. They were able to accommodate me to have half and half of the strawberry and mango flavors. I still have to come and try the strawberry shortcake as I heard it was awesome so I guess I will come back when I am in the area!

A true Chicago favorite. The Italian beef is consistently good, have it dipped for extra flavor. Sweet or hot peppers you can't go wrong. There is nothing like the S. Rosen poppyseed buns for the Vienna beef hot dogs. This place is the real deal. Finish off the meal with a chocolate cake shake, yum! The only thing that I noticed since Dick Portillo sold his restaurants is that there is less staff cleaning the tables and eating areas. Really? There are plenty of customers coming in, therefore it isn't a good idea to be short staffed.

The Italian beef dipped in gravy with sweet peppers is the real deal. The hamburger here melts in your mouth and the kids love the hot dogs and chicken strips. Don't pass on the strawberry shake, it's delicious. The only bad thing I have to say about this place is they need a better beer selection. All they have is bud and bud light. Wish they had Newcastle. On the plus side, the large schooner is a good size and affordable.

Now that a Portillo's opened in SoCal, you might as well cancel all future plans to visit Chicago (just kidding, there's a lot to see in Chicago! Like, uh...) Anyway, great hot dogs, and get it with everything, wuss. Also try the chili cheeseburger if you're really hungry. I gotta say, though, the thickness of the patties and the heartiness of the stew does a number on my post-college digestive system. Ate lunch at around 2 pm and didn't need dinner that night, granted, my lunch consisted of the chili cheeseburger, regular cheeseburger, jumbo hot dog, fries, and onion rings. OK, this was probably my fault. Fact: If you eat at Portillo's once a week, you'll eventually look like you're from the Midwest.

LOVE the Italian beef with sweet peppers, halibut sandwich, chocolate cake, and fries. I always get the Italian beef sandwich or big beef dipped which is good for at least two meals. The juices seep into the bread and the flavors all meld together. The halibut sandwich is big and the crispy edges of the fish patty is the best part. The chocolate cake isn't too sweet and satisfies my sweet tooth. I just wish the cake slice was a tad big bigger for the price. I have tried their hot dogs and chili, but I feel like I had better chili before. Their hot dogs are firm, have a nice snap and smokiness. Service is always fast and friendly. They have also started a promotion where you get a free cake slice on your b-day when you sign up for their email list!

I gladly give 5 stars. 100 stars if I could. Yes! I really love this place so much. The Chicago style hotdog is just a party of wonderful flavors in your mouth with every bite, you can't have just one. (So yourself a favor and order at least 2) The Italian beef sandwich is perfection, the meat is piled on and super juicy. (It's not salty at all, like most places) Their fries are crispy, golden goodness served hot with just the right amount of salt. (If you're a cool person, then you'll get the cheese sauce to dip your fries in) Also, the atmosphere is just so fun. This place rocks. I will be returning over and over again to make sure I get to taste everything on their menu. I've only scratched the surface and it's been nothing short of amazing. Please go eat here.

You can count on good grub at Portillo's. Is it amazing and life changing? Not at all. What it is though, is good, fresh and decently priced food. I like soggy bread. Yeah, that's me. The kid that actually enjoyed her mushy bologna sandwich in her H.R. Pufnstuf lunchbox. So I ordered my Italian beef sammie dipped. And it was just moist enough and yummy. My husband ordered his regular and that was way too dry for me. The onion rings rocked but the fries are your run of the mill crinkle cut variety. The chocolate cake shake is pretty tasty too. Come on! Chocolate cake & chocolate shake. Can't go wrong with that. it was not busy and there was no line when we got there. Yet the order taker was very impatient and rushed. Aside from that, the staff was friendly for the most part. The restaurant is clean and that's always a huge plus. We'll be back to try other items from the menu.

As far as institutions in Buena Park go, you aren't exactly spoilt for choice. There's Knott's, Medieval Times, and then possibly Portillo's. The food on offer here feels like 1980s Chicago hot dogs, and so it should remind me fondly of my childhood in the Windy City, right? Meh. Solidly but unspectacularly made American classics. I'd come back if I was in the area and we needed a place to sit down (I saw an Edward Jones advisor pitching clients in the dining room, really?) but the actual hot dogs are just OK. The crinkle-cut fries and a cheese dip were good, but let's be real, that's good anywhere. Maybe think of Portillo's as a place where you get stadium food without stadium prices.

Seriously people. You have to try this place out. A Chicago institution in Buena Park, I am a bit upset its not closer to Los Angeles but to take the drive and eat here was well worth it. While in Chicago last year I had the wonderful pleasure to eat at Portillos and fell in love. Yes in love with the Maxwell, polish dog with grilled onions on a nice soft bun. The Italian beef was amazing. Had three meals in the course of four days at Portillos while in Chicago and this coming September I will return. So back to Buena Park, walked in and felt good to see the decor I had missed since leaving Chicago, one thing I didn't see here were the Chicago Championship banners but other then that it was smaller then the Portillos back in Chicago. Food was amazing just how I remembered it. Had to pig out on onion rings, a maxwell and a Italian beef. The Italian beef is a hearty sandwich with thinly cut beef in au jus sauce and your choice of hot or sweet peppers. I like it hot... Wink Wink The Maxwell is just lovely, a nice polish dog with a snap to it and the grilled onions just makes it a delicious combination. Also had onion rings which were crispy and good. Stop in and simply try their food. Oh and my friend had their fruit chicken salad and she said it was amazing... Blah whatever. Kidding. They have a huge salad station. Pick up is individual so if you order a salad and hot food you will have to pick it up at different locations. Will be back soon...

After giving it several tries, I have to say I'm not too impressed with the Italian beef sandwich here that everyone seems to be in love with. It's a little bit too plain even with the splash of gravy. I also tried the Italian beef cheddar croissant and it was maybe a slight improvement. I'd prefer if they put the liquid cheese over the shredded cheese in the croissant though. The hot dogs here are actually pretty decent, and I prefer the Portillo Chicago Dog over the chili dog. These are kinda small so it is probably better to pay a little more to get the jumbo size. One thing that bugs me is that they charge you for sauces here. I wanted ranch for my onion rings and I had to buy it separately. Also, you can't refill your own drinks... Portillo's is A-OK at best for me...

I guess I'm lucky a Portillo's opened up 15 miles away from my house instead of right down the street. Right down the street, my diet would start consisting exclusively of beef, grease, poppy seeds, and grilled onions. 15 miles away, maybe I can keep it to a small percentage of my diet. As a transplanted Chicagoan, any hot dog place I pass immediately gets tried in the hopes that it will live up to my childhood. As we know, nothing ever lives up to anyone's childhood, and Portillo's is no exception. For one thing, they make their fries crinkle-cut, which is total blasphemy. For another, they brazenly fail to be staffed by the same guy who used to make me mint chip shakes out of the ice cream in the ice cream cooler, or be located right next to my hometown 4th of July parade. How dare they?! However, where their Polish sausages are concerned, they excel. The poppy-seed covered bun squishes satisfyingly around the dog until it's basically just bread-colored putty. The skin has a great, burnt snap and the meat is a deep umber. They put enough grilled onions on there to kill any small animal who tries to steal your lunch. It's the most Californicated version of a Chicago hot dog stand ever, given that it's located in a strip mall next to a non-strip mall between a Chili's and an Olive Garden, but I will take what I can get.

i dream of this place...like constantly! We didn't renew our Knotts Berry farm passes...so i thought i would have to go a year without some Portillo's...well fortunately i had friends from northern california attending a conference in orange county....we decided to all meet up at Portillo's!!! yes !!! i brought the whole family with...planning to head to Disneyland in the evening... kids stick with their standards...boy has the giant fully loaded chili cheese dog... girl has the plain hotdog with all the toppings on the side (which i put on my sandwich) hubby and i both got the italian beef sandwiches and we shared a garbage salad...sooooooo full! i had some wine (haha it's not good wine ...but it's good enough)...i don't recommend any of the alcohol here. i know kids went back to eat more food...oh ya...they got a giant milkshake and shared it... we ended up occupying our table for 10 on the patio for over 2 hours...even though the place is jam packed...no problems with us sitting and enjoying each others company... then we said our good bye's and hugs and the family headed to disneyland to ride grizzly river rapids 7 times then headed home .

Hot dogs are solid and are definitely a great deal. However, even though the prices are good I do think they overall quality of food is just ok. The seared tuna sandwich I ate was not good at all (too similar to a McDonald's fish sandwich in my book). However, if your in the mood for a hot dog or chili dog, portillos definitely not a bad option.

This place is delicious! I came here on a Sunday night & it was fairly packed. My friend is from Chicago, so she recommended this place. When you walk in, the decor is cool, kind of old school but modern. I was a little overwhelmed, when I saw the 3 lines. The first line towards the back, is if you want to order a salad. The middle line, has all the good stuff! (Hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches etc) The last line, is if you want to order drinks/alcohol (they have beers and a few other alcoholic drinks, as well as shakes & sodas) My order: I ordered the large fries (it was .20 more & crinkle cut) with cheese. The cheese comes on the side, to dip them in. The CHEESE is everything! The also have chili cheese or regular. - A cheeseburger (which was really good too) -Italian beef sandwich (which my friend recommended as well) the Italian beef sandwich is delicious! You can add sweet peppers, hot peppers etc. I got mine with the hot ones. She said that they were known for it, so I gave it a shot. The sandwich was spicy, juicy (lots of gravy) and on a fresh roll... What more could you want? -Italian strawberry shortcake (it was amazing!) it doesn't look appetizing, coming out of the plastic cup.. But it's really good. My friends mom also loves the chocolate cake to death (; Overall.. great food, fun atmosphere & fast service! Def recommend.

We thought this was a Mexican joint but we were pleasantly surprised. I had the california chicken sandwich, onion rings, and my friend had their famous beef steak sandwich! Everything was delicious and service is great! You order, sit down, your name is called, you pick up your food and enjoy! The menu is very extensive for choices, so be prepared to read the menu to see what suits your palate!

Came here with my FIL for lunch he got a cheeseburger with chili cheese fries that he loved . I ordered a beef tamale and their minestrone soup. The tamale was horrible I'm Mexican so I like my tamales a certain way. The beef seemed canned the masa was soggy it feel apart in my fork I couldn't finish it. So I was bummed because I left with my tamales craving. Should. Of bought one from the lady in the Wal-Mart parking lot haha.. I'm definitely coming back to try the hotdogs
